Federal research & development agencies will receive funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support a variety of research, construction and improvement projects.  The federal agencies include:

Health Information Technology

ARRA includes $19 billion to promote the development and implementation of interoperable Health Information Technology to reduce health care costs, improve quality and create jobs. The program will be overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will help establish standards for Health Information Technology and award competitive grants to universities to establish Centers for Health Care Enterprise Integration that create interoperable Electronic Health Records.

In addition, several new grant, loan and incentive programs will be made available through DHHS to build Health Information Technology architecture, promote Electronic Health Records usage among non-Medicare/Medicaid providers, support training and education, provide telemedicine, and many other areas. DHHS will also spend $300 million to support regional health information exchanges.
